A Top Lawyer Drops a Bombshell Warning About What Will Happen to Americans If Trump Is Jailed
Donald Trump’s attorney, Alina Habba, has cautioned about the possible public response if the ex-president is jailed after his conviction in the hush money case. The latest development has heightened political strains in the United States, as per reports on Monday, June 26, 2024.
Trump made history as the first former U.S. president to be convicted of a crime after being found guilty on 34 counts of falsifying business records.
The charges stem from his alleged attempt to cover up a hush money payment to adult film actor Stormy Daniels, who claimed to have had a sexual encounter with Trump years earlier. Trump has denied these allegations and labeled the trial as “rigged,” vowing to appeal the verdict.
The sentencing is scheduled for July 11, just days before the Republican National Convention, where Trump is expected to be formally nominated as the party’s candidate for the 2024 presidential election. Each count of falsifying business records carries a potential prison sentence of up to four years, but prosecutors have yet to indicate whether they will seek incarceration.
During an appearance on Fox News’s Hannity, Habba expressed concerns that Judge Juan M. Merchan might impose a prison sentence while Trump is actively campaigning. “We’re going to see what they recommend from the prosecution’s side, obviously there’s some back and forth,” she told host Sean Hannity. “But I don’t put anything past them.”
Habba also referenced comments made by Sunny Hostin on The View, where Hostin claimed to have heard from someone in Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office that a one-year prison sentence would be sought, potentially resulting in Trump serving time at Rikers Island.
“First and foremost, why are you speaking to anybody from the DA’s office?” Habba questioned. “Secondly, the fact is, I wouldn’t put anything past them, Sean. They couldn’t beat him when they put him in court, they couldn’t beat him when they put gag orders on every single case. But now, they’re going to try and jail him, I don’t doubt it.”
Habba emphasized that jailing Trump would provoke significant public backlash. “It will literally cause an uproar in this country. They cannot do it,” she asserted. The Manhattan District Attorney’s office has been contacted for comment but has not yet responded.
Habba further suggested that the motivation behind jailing Trump could be to bolster President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign. “It would be ridiculously desperate,” she said. “But hey, they are. They can’t win. Biden’s their candidate.”
In a recent ruling, Judge Merchan modified the gag order in the case, allowing Trump to comment about witnesses and jurors but maintaining restrictions on comments about court staffers, the prosecution team, and their families until sentencing. Trump is still permitted to comment on the judge and District Attorney Bragg.
