Kamala Harris has gained ground on Donald Trump, though they remain locked in an incredibly tight race across seven decisive battleground states, according to the latest Bloomberg News/Morning Consult swing-state poll.

With less than six weeks until the presidential election, Harris is tied or holds slight leads within the margin of error over the former president in the states that likely will decide the election — Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, which together represent 93 of the 270 electoral votes needed to win the White House.

If the November 2024 election for US president were being held today, and Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump were on the ballot, for whom would you vote?

The fresh data show Harris significantly closing the gap with Trump on who voters trust to handle the economy — the single biggest issue in the race. Trump had a 4 percentage-point edge on the issue in the September poll, compared with his 7-point advantage in the August survey.

On the issue of who voters trust to tackle the cost of everyday goods, Trump also saw an erosion of support — with his lead over Harris shrinking to just 1 point, compared with 3 points in August. And on who voters trust to handle issues important to the middle class, Harris enjoys an 11-point advantage — up from 7 points in August.

Harris’ proposals to expand the child tax credit, raise taxes on Americans who earn more than $400,000 a year, and provide home buyers with down payment assistance seem to be resonating, based on their popularity with the likely voters surveyed.

Some of Trump’s policy ideas, too, are popular including eliminating federal taxes on Social Security benefits, which 62% of respondents strongly support. Only 27% strongly support a centerpiece of his agenda, putting a 10% tariff on all imports.
