Perhaps JD Vance could use a primer on currying favor with an audience because he turned the Trump administration into an even bigger embarrassment than it already is. This is no mean feat because his boss, President Donald Trump, is in the middle of a dumb standoff with the Associated Press. As you may have read, Trump’s nose is out of joint because the AP still refers to the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of Mexico, not the Gulf of America, as is Trump’s wish.

You’d think there are more important issues on Trump’s plate, but here we are.

Perhaps Vice President JD Vance understands this. On Friday, during a speech at a security conference in Munich, he tried to downplay Russia’s interference in foreign elections. His audience wasn’t exactly overwhelmed.

As noted by @ReallyAmerican1, this was truly embarrassing. It’s anyone’s guess as to whether Vance knows this is embarrassing.

“BREAKING: JD Vance suffers a humiliating moment on the world stage, as only three people clapped at his failed attempt to minimize the damaging impact Russian meddling can have on a country’s democratic elections.”

Vance’s attempt to wave away allegations of Russian interference in Romania’s election with this nonsense below:

“We’re at the point, of course, that the situation has gotten so bad that this December, Romania straight-up canceled the results of a presidential election based on the flimsy suspicions of an intelligence agency and enormous pressure from its continental neighbors. As I understand it, the argument was that Russian disinformation had infected the Romanian elections.

But I’d ask my European friends to have some perspective. You can believe it’s wrong for Russia to buy social media advertisements to influence your elections. We certainly do. You can condemn it on the world stage. But if your democracy can be destroyed with a few hundred thousand dollars of digital advertising from a foreign country, then it wasn’t powerful to begin with.”

Well, maybe democracy in Romania is on flimsy footing. I’m no expert on this, so I don’t know. However, the audience was clearly unimpressed by Vance’s commentary. The fact is that Russia interferes in foreign elections. So do China, North Korea, and the United States.

It’s just the way of the world now. Right or wrong, this is what it is.

Social media users were quick to note Vance’s ignorance and hypocrisy.
