“MSNBC Anchor Blasts Trump’s ‘Reprehensible’ Presser—The Scary Truth? Nearly Half of America Is Falling for It!”

MSNBC’s Jonathan Capehart called former President Donald Trump’s Friday press conference “reprehensible” as it was still happening, but warned “just about half” of voters are “buying what he’s selling.”

MSNBC cut out of a live feed of Trump’s presser, with host Chris Jansing saying, “So much of what he said has been proven untrue.” The network ran live fact checks during Trump’s speech, which included him inflating border crossing numbers. He also defended his relationship with controversial conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer.

Trump ran through a long list of subjects during his press conference from his Southern California golf course, including accusing the FBI of faking crime statistics to lessen his chances at getting elected to accuse the Democratic Party of pulling off a “coup” to replace President Joe Biden with Vice President Kamala Harris at the top of the ticket.

Capehart called Trump’s statements “reprehensible,” specifically his avoiding a question on recent bomb threats in Springfield, Ohio. On Friday, multiple schools were hit with bomb threats that included “hateful language towards immigrants and Haitians in our community,” according to the mayor.

These threats followed Trump’s pushing a false claim during Tuesday’s debate that Haitian immigrants were kidnapping and eating pets in Springfield. The claim got an immediate fact check during the debate and town officials have denied there is anything to back this conspiracy theory up.

When asked about the threats, Trump dismissed them and said the “real threat” is the southern border. Trump said during his speech that he would push the largest mass deportation effort in his second term.

“A former president of the United States is basically poo-pooing the concerns of the elected officials in the affected city, in Springfield, Ohio. The Republican governor of the state debunked this and yet he’s still talking about it and throws it back to the border,” Capehart told Jansing on Friday.

The weekend anchor and Washington Post associate editor also raised red flags about Trump’s chosen “language” during his press conference, particularly the way he described “nests” of migrants.

“It’s the first time I’ve heard him use the word ‘nest’ when talking about immigrants. They’re coming from nests and they’re coming to this country? He is dehumanizing and devaluing migrants as part of the prelude for this mass deportation. It is unconscionable that he is saying these things and that the Republican Party is not pushing back,” Capehart said.

As offended as the anchor was by Trump’s words, he admitted that a good portion of voters are “buying what he’s selling.”

“What is most frightening of all is that just about a half of the country is buying what he’s selling,” he said.
