Reaction is pouring in from lawmakers tonight following a second apparent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

While Democrats said the incident is a clear message for gun control, at least one Republican said he disagrees.

Candidate for U.S. Senate, Preston Love Jr., said any attempt against a human is horrible.

“I’m appalled that we’ve reached this point in our country where we have these kinds of incidents, which used to be an exception and are now regular events,” he said.

He believes mental health issues and hateful rhetoric brought us here.

“We can be divided on the issues but we need to not be divided on humanity,” Love said.

His opponent, Sen. Pete Ricketts, took to X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, to condemn the violence.

He said, “Incredibly grateful for President Trump’s safety and the law enforcement officers who quickly apprehended the suspect.”

Ricketts added, “Political violence in any form is an attack on our American values.”

Congressional candidate Sen. Carol Blood said politicians need to do their part in ending division.

“If people can’t win elections without being cruel and mean and trying to scare people, this is never going to stop,” Blood said.

She said violence is never the answer.

Blood said while she supports the Second Amendment, this attempt is a clear indication of what needs to change in this country.

“I think this is a really powerful message when it comes to gun control, especially here in this area where we recently had a child shot in school,” Blood said. “You can believe in the Second Amendment, but we have to figure out some way to protect people from gun violence.”

Her opponent, Congressman Mike Flood, said stepping on people’s rights isn’t how violence should be addressed.

He believes funding security measures and mental health resources is key.

“Balance between inpatient and outpatient care,” Flood said. “We’ll be able to use prevention to stop some of these things we’ve been seeing.”

He’s glad the former president is safe.

When it comes to rhetoric, he said all politicians communicate differently.

“It’s really imperative that all the candidates for president, all the candidates for Congress, people running for U.S. Senate, even people running for local races, they have to be able to express themselves in an environment free of violence,” Flood said.

Flood, Blood, and Love all said despite the apparent attempt on Trump’s life and elections nearing, they don’t fear for their safety.

Congressman Don Bacon shared a photo of the former president on X, with a caption that reads, “Thankful Pres. Trump is safe and that they’ve apprehended the suspect.”

Sen. Tony Vargas shared a statement with KETV NewsWatch 7, saying, “There is no place for violence in our politics, and I strongly condemn all acts of violence against anyone, regardless of their political party. This must stop. I am glad that President Trump was not harmed and am thankful for quick action from law enforcement.”

Sen. Deb Fischer also shared a statement on X, saying, “Bruce and I are thankful that President Trump is safe and we will continue to pray for him and his family.”
