The U.S. president, Donald Trump, has a new plan for Gaza. He says the United States should control and rebuild the territory. He also says that Palestinians will have “no choice but to leave.” This plan has made many people angry. Egypt and Jordan quickly rejected the idea. Other Arab countries also said no.

The funny part? The man who has to convince these countries to support Trump’s plan is Marco Rubio. However, in 2016, Rubio laughed at Trump’s ability to make a peace deal in the Middle East.

During a Republican debate in 2016, Trump said he could bring peace between Israel and Palestinians. He believed he could do it because he was a “great negotiator.” He said:

“I’m a negotiator. I’ve done very well over the years through negotiation.”

Rubio was not impressed. He said:

“The Palestinians are not a real estate deal, Donald.”

Rubio also reminded Trump that this was not a business deal. He said:

“A deal is not a deal when you’re dealing with terrorists. Have you ever negotiated with terrorists?”

Trump did not like that. He fired back:

“You are not a negotiator. And, with your thinking, you will never bring peace.”

The audience clapped, and Rubio kept going. He made it clear that Trump did not understand the complexity of the situation.

Trump is not the first president to try to bring peace to the Middle East. Many presidents before him have tried, and all of them failed. In 2000, President Bill Clinton arranged a meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. Clinton offered a deal where Palestinians would control most of the West Bank and Gaza. However, they disagreed on important issues, like who controls Jerusalem. The talks failed.

In 2007, President George W. Bush tried again. He brought Israeli and Palestinian leaders together at the Annapolis Conference. They discussed a two-state solution, but the violence continued, and the deal fell apart.

President Barack Obama also pushed for peace. He told Israel to stop building settlements and encouraged direct talks. But trust between Israel and Palestine was low, and nothing changed.

If Clinton, Bush, and Obama could not do it with serious diplomacy, how can Trump do it by treating Gaza like a business deal?

Now, Marco Rubio has to convince other countries to support Trump’s Gaza plan. This is the same man who, in 2016, laughed at Trump for not understanding the Middle East.

It must be awkward for Rubio. He has to pretend that Trump’s idea is smart when, deep down, he probably knows it is not. His 2016 words are coming back to haunt him.

But this is not just about politics. If Trump forces Palestinians to leave Gaza, it could cause a humanitarian disaster. Millions of people would have nowhere to go. The United Nations has already said that the forced removal of people is against international law.

Trump thinks he can make a deal like he does in business. However, history shows that peace in the Middle East does not work like that. It is not about “making a deal.” It is about solving deep-rooted conflicts that have existed for decades.
