A significant faction of prominent Republicans has rallied behind Vice President Kamala Harris, urging fellow conservatives to support the Democratic ticket in the upcoming election over former President Donald Trump.

This effort culminated in a virtual rally where over 70,000 participants joined the “Republicans for Harris” event, marking a stark departure from traditional party lines.

The rally, held on Tuesday night, August 13, as reported by NPR, featured a lineup of former elected officials and party leaders who made compelling arguments for backing Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

Among the notable speakers was former Rep. Denver Riggleman, who once belonged to the conservative House Freedom Caucus.

Riggleman, who played a role in the House committee’s investigation of the January 6th insurrection, did not mince words, labeling Trump an “inveterate liar” and a “conspiracy theorist.”

“When you see the data and the awful things I’ve seen—the command-and-control infrastructure of January 6th—it’s clear that any Republican who values the Constitution cannot vote for someone who is fundamentally anti-Constitution,” Riggleman stated, highlighting the moral and constitutional imperative to reject Trump’s leadership.

The participants of the rally acknowledged that while they might not agree with all of Harris’ policies, they view Trump’s potential return to power as a grave threat to American democracy.

Craig Snyder, leader of the “Haley Voters for Harris” group, emphasized the importance of Harris in safeguarding democracy.

“When the Harris team wins and prevents the sudden death of American democracy, we can joyfully return to our political debates over issues like taxes and healthcare,” Snyder remarked.

Snyder, who has faced legal threats from former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, emphasized that Harris and Walz offer a balanced approach, governing from the center-left.

The rally also sought to reframe the GOP tradition, invoking former Republican presidents like Ronald Reagan and the Bushes as examples of the true legacy of the party—one that current Trump supporters have strayed from.

Speakers like Rina Shah, a political strategist, also tackled contentious issues like abortion, framing them in a way that appeals to small-government conservatives.

Rosario Marin, a former U.S. Treasurer, candidly addressed the challenges Republicans face when crossing party lines, acknowledging the personal and social costs but affirming that supporting Harris is a noble and necessary cause.

The rally’s organizers encouraged participants to take action by volunteering and publicly supporting Harris, underscoring the courage it takes for Republicans to break with tradition and declare their support for the Democratic ticket.
