Former President Donald Trump had anticipated a showdown with Vice President Kamala Harris, but the reality of the election shift has caught him off guard.

He has found himself undermining his message with erratic attacks on Harris and, for the first time in his career, is struggling to maintain the spotlight.

The historic transition from President Joe Biden to Harris and the scrutiny of Trump’s vice-presidential pick, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, left Trump somewhat sidelined as July ended.

This changed when he participated in a televised interview with three women from the National Association of Black Journalists in Chicago, as reported by NBC News on Saturday, August 3.

Trump was confrontational from the beginning, criticizing the interview format, attacking the organization, and making unfounded, racist claims about Harris’s racial identity.

His remarks dominated the news, and Trump reinforced his stance the next day by posting a photo of a young Harris in Indian attire.

Andrew Hitt, former executive director of the Wisconsin Republican Party, believes Trump’s choice to attack Harris’s racial identity was deliberate.

He noted that while Trump’s first-term policies benefited the Black community, the venue was not ideal for such a discussion.

“I think he did it on purpose. There are a lot of policies from his first term that were really, really great for the Black community, but you need to go to the right place to have that conversation,” he said.

“I don’t think the place they chose was designed to do that,” he added.

Trump’s advisors expected a hostile audience and weren’t concerned about the criticism from his performance, viewing it as inconsequential.

This 30-minute confrontation succeeded in diverting attention from Harris to Trump, placing him back at the center of public discourse, despite the intense criticism.

Longtime Republican communications advisers see it as Trump reverting to his familiar tactics, which they believe have worked in his favor, even if they seemed off-message.

However, there is concern that Trump’s racial attacks might not be effective against a Black opponent like Harris.

Many Republicans have urged Trump to focus on Harris’s political record, highlighting her policy inconsistencies on energy, gun control, healthcare, and border security.

Senator Tom Tillis of North Carolina emphasizes that the campaign should center on issues like economic failure, border security, and national security, rather than personal attacks.

“I think it shifts away from the discussion that I want to focus on, but it may very well be that we have a difference of opinions about what’s going to move the voters,” he said.

“I for one think it’s the failure on the economy, the failure on the border and the failure on national security.”

With fewer than 100 days left until Election Day, insiders from both parties view the race as tightening, with Trump feeling the pressure and Harris still needing to prove herself.

The sudden shift in the race’s dynamics over five weeks has left Trump trying to regain his footing.

Following a series of events, including an assassination attempt on Trump and Biden’s exit from the race in favor of Harris, the political landscape has changed rapidly.

Polling are indicating a closer race, with Harris improving in key battleground states, although Trump remained ahead in most.

Harris’ emergence has energized the Democratic base, while Trump faces challenges in maintaining message discipline.
