“Trump Celebrates Special Counsel’s Resignation: ‘The Stench of Deranged Jack Smith and His Thugs is GONE!’”
President-elect Donald Trump basked in the resignation of special counsel Jack Smith — which was made official in a court filing Saturday.
In a pair of Truth Social posts early Sunday (one shortly after 1 a.m. ET, the other after 7 a.m.), the president-elect boasted about Smith ending his work “empty handed,” despite enormous financial resources.
“Deranged Jack Smith was fired today by the DOJ,” Trump wrote in the 1 a.m. post — misstating the resignation. “He is a disgrace to himself, his family, and his Country. After spending over $100,000,000 on the Witch Hunt against TRUMP, he left town empty handed!”
It’s unclear where Trump is getting the figure of $100 million for Smith’s work. A Fox News report in late November — citing financial disclosures from the special counsel’s office — pegged the cost of the investigations at $47.5 million as of Sept. 30. While the final number is surely north of 50 million, it seems likely to fall well short of the $100 million Trump is claiming.
Regardless, the number Trump seems to be more concerned with is zero — which is what he’s claiming Smith accomplished during his tenure.
“The Stench of Deranged Jack Smith and his thugs is GONE,” Trump wrote in the 7 a.m. post. “They were sent packing after spending over $100,000,000, destroying the lives of many people and families, who will never be the same again. Deranged Jack accomplished nothing, except to show what complete losers my political opponents are!!!”
Smith did complete a final report on his work, which he submitted Jan. 7. The court battle over the public release of that report is ongoing.
