Democratic leaders have issued a strong message to supporters of former President Donald Trump, asserting that he will be prevented from taking office even if he wins the popular vote in the upcoming election

Democrat Rep. Jamie Raskin has declared that Congress will prevent former President Donald Trump from assuming office on January 6, 2025, even if he wins the 2024 election.

According to the post shared on Monday, August 5, 2024, this assertion has stirred considerable controversy and concern over potential civil unrest. A video from February 2024, where Raskin made these statements, has recently gained widespread attention.

Raskin’s comments were made during an event at Politics and Prose bookstore in Washington, D.C., where he was speaking at a book talk hosted by author Rick Hasen.

He emphasized that Congress plans to invoke the insurrection clause of the 14th Amendment to block Trump from taking office. The insurrection clause, part of Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, disqualifies individuals who have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the United States from holding public office.

“What can be put into the Constitution can slip away from you very quickly,” Raskin stated, highlighting the urgency and potential volatility of the situation.

He criticized those who dismissed the relevance of the 14th Amendment’s insurrection clause, asserting its clear intent and significance.

Raskin’s comments reflect deep divisions within the U.S. political landscape, particularly regarding the legitimacy of Trump’s potential return to power. He warned that if Trump were disqualified by Congress, it could lead to severe unrest, necessitating significant security measures.

“And then they want to kick it to Congress so it’s going to be up to us on January 6, 2025, to tell the rampaging Trump mobs that he’s disqualified and we need bodyguards for everybody in civil war conditions,” Raskin said.

His words suggest a grim forecast of what could occur if Trump’s supporters react violently to such a congressional decision.

Moreover, Raskin issued a veiled critique of the U.S. Supreme Court, suggesting that some justices are neglecting their duties by not addressing the implications of the 14th Amendment adequately.

He accused the justices of evading their responsibility to interpret the Constitution correctly, which he believes contributed to the nation’s escalating tensions.

“All because the nine justices – not all of them but these justices who have not many cases to look at every year, not that much work to do – a huge staff, great protection, simply do not want to do their job and interpret what the great 14th Amendment means,” Raskin added.

These remarks by Raskin underscore the highly charged atmosphere surrounding the upcoming 2024 election and the potential constitutional crises that may arise. As political factions prepare for a contentious battle over Trump’s eligibility, the nation could face unprecedented political and social upheaval.
