Division Erupts in Trump’s Own Camp as Reporter Discloses Private Happenings After Recent Blunder
CNN political analyst and New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman has weighed in on former President Donald Trump’s recent comments about Vice President Kamala Harris’s race.
Despite concerns from those close to him, Trump appears determined to discuss it.
Trump sparked controversy at the National Association of Black Journalists convention in Chicago by falsely asserting that Harris only recently began identifying as Black, after previously highlighting her Indian heritage.
“So, I don’t know. Is she Indian or is she Black?” Trump questioned. On the AC360 show on Friday, August 2, guest host John King spoke with Haberman about this issue.
“Trump has a history of letting his personal instincts dominate, particularly when it comes to strong women and racial topics,” King noted.
“What’s the internal discussion about this?”
“It’s less of a debate internally than it used to be, John,” Haberman responded.
“I remember back in 2020, during the protests over George Floyd’s death, Trump tweeted, ‘When the looting starts, the shooting starts,’ echoing a racist Miami police chief from decades ago. There was significant outcry within the White House and unease among his aides.”
Haberman continued, explaining that Trump is keen on highlighting Harris’s biracial heritage as part of his campaign strategy.
She added that this is despite the fact that the narrative is quite unpopular deep inside the Trump camp, with some his close associates being privately uncomfortable with his behavior lately.
She added that even so, the Republican presidential candidate seems keen on clinging onto this strategy, adding that those uncomfortable with it are also not doing enough to stop him.
“At the NABJ conference earlier this week, Trump questioned Harris’s Black identity, a point he’s been pushing for a while. His team quickly supported him, echoing his statements on Twitter and displaying similar sentiments at his rally in Pennsylvania,” she said.
“While some of his close associates privately wish he hadn’t made such remarks, there seems to be little resistance against him on this matter.”
Harris has quickly managed to rally the Democratic party behind her, after taking over from the outgoing Joe Biden, who is not seeking reelection.
