The Trump campaign has accused the hospitality union of political partisanship and detachment from its members’ needs in a fiery rebuttal to UNITE HERE’s recent endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for the 2024 presidential race.

The union’s decision to back Harris comes amid tensions over former President Donald Trump’s proposal to eliminate taxes on tips, a move intended to bolster support among hospitality workers as reported by Fox News on August 5, 2024.

The endorsement was announced following UNITE HERE’s rejection of Trump’s tax-free tips pledge, a policy that the campaign had hoped would resonate with the union’s membership.

UNITE HERE, which represents workers across the hospitality industry, stated that Trump’s proposal did not align with their broader goals for worker benefits and wage increases.

Instead, the union opted to support Harris, citing her track record on labor issues and worker rights as more in line with their priorities.

Trump campaign spokesperson Karoline Leavitt slammed the endorsement in a statement to Fox News Digital, characterizing it as evidence of the union’s alignment with the Democratic Party.

“It’s sad that union bosses continue to be puppets for the Democrat Party and are completely out of touch with the workers they are supposed to represent,” Leavitt said.

She argued that Trump’s tax-free tips plan would have provided significant financial relief to hospitality workers, and accused UNITE HERE of prioritizing partisan politics over tangible benefits for its members.

The Trump campaign has been focusing on issues that resonate with blue-collar workers, hoping to reclaim support among traditionally Democratic-leaning demographics.

By promising to remove taxes on tips, Trump aimed to address what he and his campaign view as a significant financial burden on service workers, while also positioning himself as a champion of working-class interests.

UNITE HERE’s endorsement of Harris marks a strategic move within the broader labor movement, reflecting a preference for policies and candidates that they believe will bring about systemic change in worker protections and wage policies.

The union’s leadership has praised Harris for her support of minimum wage increases and her commitment to strengthening labor rights, which they argue are crucial for improving conditions in the hospitality sector.

As the 2024 election campaign heats up, the clash between Trump and UNITE HERE underscores the broader political battle over labor issues and worker representation.

With both sides staking out their positions, the debate over who best represents the interests of working Americans is set to be a key issue in the upcoming election.
