CNN’s David Axelrod has cautioned Democrats against becoming overly optimistic while previewing the upcoming Democratic National Convention.

Speaking on Tuesday, August 20, he argued that Republican nominee Donald Trump could still have an edge in the presidential race.

In a discussion with anchor Anderson Cooper about the potential risks of Democrats being excessively hopeful, Axelrod agreed that such a concern is valid.

“I’ve been emphasizing this for a while,” Axelrod said, adding that while it is true that Democratic nominee Kamala Harris is doing good, nothing is guaranteed yet.

He reported noticing signs of overconfidence in the Democratic corner, warning that Trump could still turn tables on them and leave them disappointed

“Kamala Harris has indeed made remarkable strides. When we were in Milwaukee a month ago, there was a sense of overconfidence, a belief that the race was effectively over and that Republicans would achieve a landslide victory, potentially gaining significant majorities in both the House and Senate,” he said.

He noted, however, that the situation has shifted considerably. Despite this, he emphasized that the race remains highly competitive, warning that Trump could win even if Harris wins the popular vote.

He added that if the elections were held today, Trump would end up in White House thanks to the electoral college system.

“If the election were held today, I’m uncertain about the outcome. It’s possible that Trump could prevail due to the Electoral College system,” Axelrod explained.

He stressed that for Democrats to secure victory in the crucial battleground states, they must achieve a substantial lead in the Electoral College.

“Recall that Joe Biden won the popular vote by 7 million last time, but the election was decided by a narrow margin of about 45,000 votes across three pivotal states,” he added.

“Harris is right to emphasize the importance of enthusiasm for the Democratic Party, but this enthusiasm needs to be transformed into vigorous action to secure the win,” Axelrod added.

Since replacing Biden as the Democratic nominee, Harris has shown significant improvement in the polls.

Many surveys now indicate that she and Trump are in a tight race in the key swing states that will ultimately decide the election.
